Note: In the Army, there are two types of E-4s: corporals and specialists. While both receive the same pay, a coroporal is a noncommissioned officer and a specialist is not. An E-4 is normally designated an NCO (corporal) if they are a team or section leader. Corporals are more common amoungst the Combat Arms, but many Combat Support MOS's (jobs) may have them. In the Army, promotion to E-4 comes automatically (with commander's recommendation) at 26 months Time-in-Service. That means that most people that enlist for 3-5 years would spend an awful long time as a PFC. That's not much to look forward to, besides, most people are not ready for NCO responsibility with just a couple of years in service. Hence, the Specialist rank. It's actually a throw back from the not so distance past. Up until the mid 80's the ranks were divided into 2 separate structures. E1-3's were the Private ranks. There were the Specialist ranks (Specialist 4 through Specialist 7). These were soldiers that were specialists in thier field (hence the name). They were not NCO's and didn't have NCO authority. There were the NCO ranks (Corporal through Sergeant First Class). These are the leaders.
In the Army and Marine Corps, First Sergeant is a rank (E-8), and special duty position held by the top E-8 enlisted person in the unit. In the Air Force, first sergeant is a special duty position which can be held by those in the rank of E-7, E-8, or E-9 (The authorized rank of an Air Force First Sergeant is dependent upon the size of the unit. The more enlisted personnel assigned, the higher the rank of a first sergeant that unit is authorized).

Back in the Good Old Days

Back in the Good Old Days, in the Army E-5, E-6 and E-7 also had specialist ratings. I made Specialist E-5 in 18 months with no AIT training. I did it on my good looks.

Back in my Good Old Days, Airman basic was no insignia at all, 1 stripe was Airman, 2 stripes was Airman 1st Class, and 3 stripes was Sgt.

Keith during basic training I was on a detail cleaning an abandoned office building one day and found a large chart of ranks which had the old style specialist ranks on it. That was the first time I had ever heard of them. I wonder how a SSGT and say a SPEC 6 interacted? Was the SSGT considered to be in charge?

Dave:

The SGT was always in charge in field operations. Command decisions went to the SGT over SPEC-5. In the work place it was an equal place depending on the chain of command and time in grade. In supply we didn't have a corporal rank only specialist E-4. Depending on your MOS numbers when you went from E-4 to E-5 you were either a SGT or SPEC-5. SPEC-5 was always considered a NonCom. I think the reason they got rid of the Specialist ratings after you were E-5 was because you were considered a NonCom. A Spec-6 would always outrank a SGT E-5.

Would be kind of fun and strange to put on the pay charts for all those ranks/rates from then until now.

Use to be when you went over four years there was a pay raise ( i think ).

enough............

reeb..............

I think my base pay as an E-1 a month was $89.00, and three years later it was $454.00 a month as E-5, plus the extras.

I remember my pay check in basic was $32 after taxes every two weeks. I remember they offered me a $5K bonus and my choice of duty station if I re-enlisted.

A fellow airman took a "short" re-enlistment; he signed up for what amounted to an additional 2 years and got the 5 grand. He threw one hell of great party; plenty of booze, food, and professional female entertainment. I personally took part in the feminine entertainment twice. Ah, to be young and virale again.
