(EXCERPT) HANOI, Nov. 18 — The following is a summary of key events in
U.S.-Vietnam relations from the early 1960s until Wednesday's Saigon
Port call by the frigate USS Vandegrift, the first to visit Vietnam
since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.

1962 - U.S. has 12,000 military advisers in South Vietnam and
''Strategic hamlet'' programme forces peasants to regroup in 16,000
fortified villages 1964 - North Vietnamese patrol boats attack U.S.
destroyer Maddox in Gulf of Tonkin. U.S. bombing of North Vietnam
begins. U.S. Congress passes Gulf of Tonkin Resolution allowing
president to take steps ''to prevent further aggression.'' Washington
imposes trade embargo against Hanoi

1965 - United States sends combat troops to South Vietnam 1968 - First
direct peace talks between Washington and Hanoi in Paris 1969 - July
30 - President Richard Nixon visits Saigon, the first visit to the
city by a serving U.S. president 1973 - January 27 - Ceasefire
agreement is signed in Paris, ending U.S. combat role in Vietnam 1975
- April 30 - North Vietnamese forces take over Saigon, ending the war
and reunifying Vietnam. Washington extends embargo to all of Vietnam
1978 - Vietnam's relations deteriorate with China and Beijing-backed
Khmer Rouge governm...
