A former interpreter who spent years translating and advising the German military has been charged with spying for Iran.

The 51-year-old German-Afghan dual citizen, identified only as Abdul S., appeared in a closed-door court on Monday over what officials called “a particularly serious case” of treason. He was also charged with breaching secrecy laws in 18 cases.

The trial will be protracted and is expected to last until at least March 31, although very few details about the case have been released. Presiding judge Thomas Bergmann, who barred media from Abdul’s trial, said that it would be conducted privately “until further notice.”

The man’s 40-year-old wife, identified as Asiea S., was also charged with being an accessory to treason. Prosecutors in the case said that she supported the spying from the beginning, although what that support entailed has not been released.

The man faces life in prison if he is found guilty of the charges, and his wife faces a maximum of 11 years.
