In this Oct. 5, 2016, photo released by the U.S. Navy, the Spanish Navy frigate Alvaro de Bazan, right, cruises alongside the destroyer USS Carney, left, off the coast of Rota, Spain, in the Mediterranean Sea. Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine, said in November 2017 it is partnering with the Spanish builder of the Alvaro de Bazan on a new design for up to 20 frigates for the U.S. Navy. The Navy this week fired the first Jewish woman to command a warship due to a “loss of confidence in her ability to command.”

Cmdr. Alexa Jenkins was captain of the USS Carney when she was relieved on Wednesday by Capt. Jennifer Blakeslee, commander of Naval Surface Squadron 14 based in Jacksonville, Florida.

Cmdr. Jenkins will be temporarily assigned to Capt. Blakeslee’s staff. Capt. Aaron Anderson will take over as commander of the Carney until a permanent replacement is identified, Navy officials said Thursday.

The Carney is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer. The ship was reassigned to Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville in July 2020 after spending five years in Rota, Spain, as part of U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa.

Navy officials did not confirm the reason for Cmdr. Jenkins’ relief. A fire broke out in late December while the ship was pier side at its home port. The ship’s crew extinguished the blaze, but six sailors were hospitalized for smoke inhalation, Navy Times reported.

Both Navy Commanders were fired in one day

The Navy relieved the Commanding Officers of two warships on Wednesday, the service announced.

The Navy announced the relief of Cmdr. Alexa Jenkins, commander of the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Carney, based out of Naval Station Mayport, Florida and assigned to Naval Surface Squadron 14, on Thursday.

Jenkins had served as commanding officer of the Carney since June 2022, the Navy said in a press release.

Capt. Aaron Anderson will be temporarily assigned as the new commanding officer of the Carney.

That same day, the Navy also disclosed that Rear. Adm. Tom Williams, Commander of Expeditionary Strike Group Two (ESG-2) relieved Capt. Michael D. Nordeen, commander of the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock USS Mesa Verde.

Nordeen assumed command of the USS Mesa Verde, based out of Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, in August 2022.

Capt. Gregory Baker, ESG-2 Chief of Staff, will be assigned as commanding officer in the interim.

Both firings were due to a “loss of confidence” in Jenkins and Nordeen’s ability to command. The Navy did not provide any further information about the cause of the reliefs.

#1. Personal note: The Navy is doing alot of house keeping of late. Whomever assigned
them most likely didn't have all the facts or there's more to this - then we're being
told?

#2. Personal Note: There has to be more to this story then is being told?
Something is afoot here and very limited information to really judge these
two skipper's removal. Maybe more will come out? - Have to wait and see!
