Re: A Sniper with 20 Clips???????????
gee whiz...them college professors must have lied thru their teeth when they
tried to tell me there wuz two basic types of friction coefficients... one is static...it's the force you must overcome to get something moving to begin with. could be the reason there were problems with the springs at the first coupla rounds. they're jammed in there and it takes more effort to get em to feed initially than it does later as the tension is relieved. the other is dynamic...this is the force that you have opposing you as you try to move something. I suppose this is the friction you encounter after the rounds begin moving into the rifle...ya know...the sides of the magazine, the flanges where it fits into the lower receiver. they may have used improper tensioning on the springs...lowest bidders etc...if the magazine fed rounds into the rifle initially just fine then they may have had problems with the last coupla rounds. company prolly added a coil to the spring instead of dealing with the makeup of the spring's material. recall a physics problem where you incline a ramp with a block of wood on it. at some point that block of wood is gonna move down the ramp due to the acceleration of gravity. the static coefficient of friction has to be overcome to get it going...the kinetic coefficient of friction acts on the block after it is moving. there's also molecular and a few others but I'm confused already...but can you see where that magazine coulda had problems on both ends. certainly most of us agree that old magazines were trouble and by the way, if it hasn't been mentioned before...grunts carried ammo in the funny lookin green pouches straight outta the ammo can...in addition to loaded magazines. it probably is more than likely folks carried at least one of them bandoliers...mebbe two...in that case...20 clips. :) see I'm on yer side...sometimes. Dino the Dino reports: > I didn't work for Colt but I went to armorer school in 1968 and by then, 52 > changes had been made to the M-16... more changes than there were parts. > I said that all of the malfunctions that I had with my M-16 rifles occurred > during the first few rounds when the spring tension would be the greatest... > This was also the case with others who I knew had problems... > |

The claim was that the springs became weak when all 20 rounds were placed in the magazine. A weak spring fails during the last few rounds - not the first few rounds... Isn't this the third time I've said that? It is just an old myth that won't go away... |

I can't for the life of me imagine why hearing it at a rifle range, ITR, NTA and out in the field with seasoned combat vets ( in my case WWII and Korea) you wouldn't give them the benefit of the doubt. I used 14 rounds in my M-14, I came home. That is more than I could have asked for at the time. Myth or not, if some kid asked me if I knew any secrets of staying alive in combat, I would say yea, respect your elders and those that have been there and done that......This is just one example. Springs have a memory, if you abuse it over time it will let you down. I only fired an M-16 for familiarization so I don't have first hand knowledge of that system, but I do know the M-14 and in my unit, we all paid attention to those things. It was second nature. |

For someone who ?was? there you sure missed a lot. Only a guess but may-be one of the posts were right, you inhaled too many fumes burning all that shit. Taped mag's were a big thing at one time, as were loading them with 18 rounds. Then again may-be you were there, but which side did you do your fighting for? Them Gooks did some strange shit, and this fits with the tales you weave. A mind is a terrible thing to waste, if you have one. Good luck with your next fantasy. Ken 11 Bravo |
